The protagonist, Sathyamoorthy aka Sakthi (Vishnuu Vishal) is a low-ranking constable, whose attitude towards his job. The villain, Cycle Shankar (Sai Ravi) is a ruthless gangster, who is on the run from the cops. He comes to Silukkuvaarpatti, the place where Sakthi lives, to murder an ex-minister (Mansoor Ali Khan), but ends up being thrown into prison by the hero – who doesn’t know that he is the gangster whom the entire police force is hunting for – over a trivial reason. But Shankar manages to escape and swears to leave the place only after murdering Sakthi.

Silukkuvaarpatti Singam takes a while to get going as it takes its own time to establish the characters and the various conflicts. Given the half-a-dozen sub-plots and the two dozen characters, this seems quite reasonable. And then, the laughs start trickling in, and by the time we reach the intermission, we end up with a handful of funny episodes, like the scene at the police station where the wives of a few men whom the cops have locked up ask the sub-inspector (Livingston) to not let their husbands out, and the one where Sakthi roughs up Shankar not realising who he actually is. There are also a few hilarious characters – Tony (an in-form Yogi Babu), the cousin brother of Shankar, the guy (Lollu Sabha Manohar) who ends up with Shankar’s phone, and Share Auto Chandran (Anandaraj), the local gangster.

But the second half doesn’t really live up to the promise of the first. Yes, there are funny sequences, but none that is an absolute laugh riot. And the plot points actually feel like a mismash of many comedies of the past. Sakthi is similar to the Bhagyaraj character in Avasara Police 100. His attempts at disguise bring to mind what Ilavarasu’s character did in Kalakalappu. One of his looks recalls Rajini’s in a similar setting in Uzhaippali. A chase sequence involving three vehicles and a misunderstanding is a variation of a similar one in Kalakalappu…

A few of these episodes do manage to make us laugh. The timing goes missing in a few (as in the epilogue where Chandran narrates his back story). Some scenes, like the climax, lack the all-out madcap energy and absurdity of the films of Sundar C and the Kamal Haasan-Crazy Mohan films. The humour is inconsistent. And one particular sequence, where the gangsters chase Sakthi, who is dressed as a woman, is in bad taste. We get rape jokes! Yogi Babu, who lifts the humour quotient every time he is on screen, even makes a joke on the gang rape in the climax of Paruthiveeran.
